Toymaker Mattel Inc. on Tuesday announced a third recall of Chinese-made toys, saying it would take back more than 800,000 units globally that contain "impermissible" levels of lead. In total, 522,000 U.S. toys and 322,000 outside the United States are being recalled. The toys were shipped between August 3, 3006, and July 31, 2007, the company said. The latest recall involves three Fisher-Price toy models and eight Barbie brand playsets. No Barbie dolls were included.
Mattel instructs people to go to its Web site (www.service.mattel.com) to establish whether they own an affected toy. After they fill out a form and send back the affected parts, Mattel will send them replacement and bonus parts. The recall arose out of Mattel's investigation of its toys manufactured by vendors in China. In the last five weeks, the company already had announce ...
Hollywood has pounded TorrentSpy this past week, winning two important court decisions against the BitTorrent search engine that could hand the movie industry some powerful new tools in its fight against illegal file sharing. But the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a proponent of strong privacy laws on the Web, has criticized the court findings and claim they pose serious threats to Internet users.
Last week, U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper threw out the lawsuit TorrentSpy brought against the Motion Picture Association of America last year for allegedly purchasing copies of private e-mails belonging to TorrentSpy executives. Robert Anderson, a former business associate of one of TorrentSpy's founders, acknowledged "hacking" into the company's e-mail systems and rigging it so he would receive a copy of all outgoing and incoming e-mail co ...
Doctor Who fans will be forced to go for almost two years without a series fix from the Tardis-travelling Timelord, because actor David Tennant will take time off to do stagework, the BBC said Monday. The fourth season of the latest iteration of the sci-fi action drama will air in the spring of 2008, but season five will be delayed until 2010, BBC director of fiction Jane Tranter said Monday.
The show is one of the public broadcaster's biggest success stories in recent years and has proved an international hit. The BBC will air three one-off specials during 2009 and a Christmas special in 2008. Tennant will work with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford Upon Avon on projects thought to include a lengthy run of Hamlet.

Master filmmaker Ingmar Bergman, one of the greatest artists in cinema history, died Monday at his home on an island off the coast of Sweden. He was 89. Bergman's dozens of works combined deep seriousness, indelible imagery and unexpected flashes of humor in finely written, inventively shot explorations of difficult subjects such as plague and madness. His vision encompassed the extremes of his beloved Sweden: the claustrophobic gloom of unending winter nights, its glowing summer evenings and the bleak magnificence of the Baltic islet of Faro, where the reclusive artist spent his last years.
Once described by Woody Allen as "probably the greatest film artist ... since the invention of the motion picture camera," Bergman first gained international attention with 1955's Smiles of a Summer Night, a romantic comedy that inspired the Stephen Sondh ...
Leonard Nimoy isn't through with Spock yet. The 76-year-old actor will don his famous pointy ears again to play the role in an upcoming Star Trek film due out Christmas 2008. "This is really going to be a great movie. And I don't say things like that lightly," Nimoy told a gathering of 6,500 fans Thursday at Comic-Con, the nation's largest pop-culture convention. He greeted the crowd with a Vulcan salute.
Nimoy was joined by the newly named young Spock, Heroes star Zachary Quinto, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Nimoy. Both Spocks were introduced by the film's director and co-producer, J.J. Abrams. "This is a series I loved as a kid," Abrams said, acknowledging that he was "more of a Star Wars kid than a Star Trek kid." "This matters so much to so many peop ...
In a move that could augur a trend that will fundamentally change the world of comics, IDT Internet Mobile Group (IMG), a division of the IDT Corporation, has acquired a controlling interest in IDW Publishing. IMG also announced the formation of Zedge Studios to develop and license content for distribution through Web and mobile platforms. Media conglomerate Liberty Media, which owns the Starz group of cable channels and Starz Media, aquired IDT in 2006 and the latter's acquisition of IDW Publishing should create some synergies throughout the growing Liberty Media empire.
Moshe Berger, former head of IDT Entertainment, who is now in charge of IDT, is pleased with the acquisition of IDW saying: "IDW Publishing's stellar reputation in the comics and graphic novel arenas and its emphasis on original intellectual properties in the action and horror genres are a perfect fit for Zedge Stud ...
